Landpack develops an eco-friendly alternative to styrofoam packaging

Munich, 28th September 2015 – The Munich-based engineering company Landpack has developed a new and ecological insulating packaging, among others for the ever-growing online trade with groceries. The Landbox® is made of the agricultural byproduct straw and can be disposed of in your organic waste or garden. It is produced climate-neutrally and only needs a small amount of the energy used to produce styrofoam, but at the same time comes with the same insulating power.

“The Landbox is the first, real alternative to Styrofoam regarding packaging,“, says executive director Dr. Thomas Maier-Eschenlohr, “since online shops that are trading goods that are sensitive to temperature and shock keep growing, the strategical importance of eco-friendly and insulating packaging grows. The packaging also must be easily disposed of, so the consumer won’t have any extra work. Especially the booming market of online grocery shops has been waiting for a sustainable packaging solution.”

The Landpack GmbH & Co. KG has been founded in 2013 and develops and operates manufacturing facilities that produce insulating packaging made of natural fibers. The fibers are mostly used in their pure form, low-energy and after the methods of food engineering. It’s Landpack’s goal to make something new of a rarely used resource: straw. Recent environmental studies show that of the around 30% occurring straw during harvesting most can be used for other things without damaging the humus balance. Dr. Thomas Maier-Eschenlohr says, “Straw is also an ideal insulating material – hygienic, optically-pleasing and furnished with a high-tech biopolymer structure.“

The used straw is delivered by local farmers under contract. Apart from grain yields, this also means an additional source of income for them. Landpack supervises the crops from cultivation to harvest to guarantee ideal quality.

An international patent has been registered for the product and the production.

Landpack are collaborating with the Klingele Group, one of the leading corrugated cardboard companies, and offer their customers a perfect solution, know-how and advice regarding the shipping of refrigerated goods.

The Landbox will be presented at the Klingele booth (Hall 7, Booth 138) during this year’s FachPack (29.9.-1.10.2015, Nuremberg).
